Time flies when you are having fun! Our theme for May is art in the world! 5th and 4th graders are going to explore further into drawing and try non-traditional techniques, such as painting with our feet! 3rd graders are finishing up our Wisconsin Herd signs and dive into more Pop Art. 2nd and First graders are continuing the color wheel and will have fun with printmaking. Kindergarten is exploring more lines and shapes while using their color knowledge!

One more month of Art! Let’s make it a good one!

REMINDERS IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Spring is here! Please make sure that your students are wearing the proper footwear to school and that they have a separate pair of closed toe gym shoes to wear for Physical Education. If your student wears sandals to school, please send socks with them so they can borrow shoes. 

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION?

April has been a month of fun! We have backtracked to games that we would have played over the holiday months when we were virtual like Ghost in the Graveyard. The end of the year goes by so quickly, we try to pack as many new and exciting games in as possible. Fourth and fifth grade students have learned to play a game called Monarchy, as well as a lot of team/invasion games. Third grade has worked really hard on sportsmanship and played a game called “The Floor is Lava.” This required a huge amount of teamwork to get their group from one side of the gym to the other while only using certain equipment and not touching the floor! Kindergarten through second grade students have gotten to explore more equipment with station work and will finish the year with field day games. 

WHAT’S NEXT IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION?

Time to start planning for next year! Hopefully we will be back to normal and can enjoy all of the exciting traditions in P.E.. Mrs Lange is excited to bring back ‘Bring your Parent(s) to P.E.’ day, The Kids Heart Challenge, and of course field day! Wishing you all a safe and wonderful summer!

FIELD DAY

The date is set! Friday May 28th with a rain date of Tuesday June 1! Unfortunately, we are not allowed to have parent volunteers this year but I greatly appreciate those that have reached out to me, asking if they can help. 

TIPS TO BE FIT AT HOME

1. Do you own a jump rope? Even though Jump Rope for Heart is over, many students have ‘jump rope fever’ and want every chance they have to practice! Jump Roping is a very underrated exercise and can burn calories very fast. 

2. Make fitness fun! Exercise doesn’t have to be boring. Get the whole family involved and take a walk together, or even go to the gym/YMCA for a day of fun.

3. With the warm weather, many 5k races are popping up around the community. Find a family fun run and commit to being fit!

 

 

As we are getting close to the end of the year, we are all doing many fun things in the music room. Every grade is learning about how we can mix art and music together. Many of the kids are also learning new “camp” songs. The 5th graders just started learning about and playing ukulele. 3rd and 4th graders are using their Chromebooks to create music in a different way. The 1st and 2nd graders are playing a variety of fun musical games. And kindergarten has been playing many different classroom instruments to create new and fun sounds.

 

 

End of the Year Chromebook/Hot Spot Returns!

Chromebooks, charging cords, and hotspots (if you have one), are all due back to school on Monday, May 24th. Please make sure that you have both parts of the charging cord for the Chromebook (the part that plugs into the wall and the part that plugs into the Chromebook).  If you are returning a hotspot also return the charging cord and brick with it in the case that was provided. Books from the school library are due back to school on Friday, May 28th.  If you do not return your Chromebook or hotspot they will be bricked so that they are unusable and you will be fined for the replacement costs.  If you return them late the fine will be removed, however a bricking/unbricking fee of $60 will be added to your account.  Please return all these resources on time.  Contact angie.kese@oshkosh.k12.wi.us if you have questions.

  Math Corner with Mrs. Reuter

It is exciting to look back to the beginning of the year and see how much your child has grown in his or her understanding of mathematics.  We use mathematics in our lives each day.  Be on the lookout for continued opportunities to “talk and think” math with your child in the context of their everyday experiences.  To get you started, here is a list of games you may have at home that involve mathematical thinking.   I am also including information there to access Bridges math resources. 

Games to Play that Practice Math:

We hope you use these ideas throughout the rest of this school year and during the summer!

Go Fish – Students recognize and identify numbers

Cribbage- Students make combinations of 15 and also count to 31 by using combinations of numbers

Phase 10 (card game) – Groups numbers with same number, puts numbers in order

Kings Corners- Played with a deck of cards. Puts numbers in descending order King to Ace while following a color pattern

Farkle or Yahtzee-adding point values for the rolls of the dice you get

Sorry-counts spaces on a game board

Solitaire- Played with a deck of cards. Putting numbers in descending order and ascending order

UNO – matching numbers

Slap Jack or Speed– Played with a deck of playing cards.  Knowing the number that comes after or before a number that is played.

Numeral Identification Bingo - Make a bingo board on a piece of paper with four rows and four columns.  Put random numbers on the board.  As you are driving in the car, watch out the window for numerals printed on signs, license plates, buildings, etc.  When you see a numeral that matches on your card, mark it.  4 in a row -Bingo!

Make 5 or Make 10 - In the car or anywhere, look for combinations of 5.  For example, 3 horses and 2 cows, 4 balloons and 1 vendor, 5 yellow shirts and 0 blue shirts.

Count Around - Start at any number and count up or back.  Count by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s, 10’s, or any other number.

Salute - Three people can play.  Use the number cards from  deck of cards. Add in the Jacks for 0.  Two people take a card and put the card on their forehead like a salute without looking at their cards.  The third person then adds, subtracts, or multiplies the numbers that the two other players have.  Based on the number each person sees on the other person’s forehead, the players figure out which number they are holding on their own forehead.
