News from the Art Room...

   Hello and happy fall! With a new school year and new art teacher (Miss Stumpf), we have been getting to know each other and learning expectations. So far so good, right!?

Kindergarten has been learning about color mixing inspired by the book, Mix It Up. They are learning how to make orange, green, purple and brown from mixing red, blue, and yellow. We are now using that new knowledge to create fall trees in October. 

1st graders had put their skills to the test and drew patterns on black paper with a white crayon to create sketchbooks! As it gets colder, we are weaving paper blankets for our paper selves to sleep under using complementary colors.

2nd graders had the opportunity to paint with texture tools for their sketchbook covers, and are now learning about Edvard Munch’s painting ‘The Scream’....just in time for all things spooky.

3rd and 4th graders are moving on from collaging paint scraps onto their sketchbooks to using textiles. 3rd grade is weaving dreamcatchers, while 4th grade gets to weave on a loom and learn about artist Sheila Hicks.

5th graders are working hard on a new way to create a sketchbook using cardboard and left over fabric. After sketchbooks are complete, we will be looking at artist Yayoi Kusuma and her polka-dot pumpkins.

Art to Remember is going to be held off until Spring due to projects being 3D at this time. Do not forget to join Miss Stumpf’s Art Class in Google classroom if you have not already.

Dreambox Information for Families 2020

Many family online resources are available to you as you learn more about your child’s math curriculum, Bridges in Mathematics. Below are the steps to navigating Math Learning Center’s online resource along with information on an additional supplemental resource Dreambox. 

1.  Go to www.mathlearningcenter.org  Here you will find seven tabs below the title. The For Families tab provides unit overviews for each grade level as well as additional parent blogs and article resources.

2. Next, select the grade level you would like to learn more about. Here you will be able to view Unit Overview, FAQ’s and ways parents can help with math.

 

3. In the Home Learning tab you will find additional  online math games activities by grade level to support your child in building  math skills at home.

4. I would like to highlight the Math Learning Center FREE APPS that are found under the Apps  tab.  These are wonderful tools for students to help model and work through math problems. These are very helpful for students in explaining their math thinking and reasoning. Many of the apps are digital models of the hands on tools that the students utilize in the classroom. Be sure to check them out! They are AMAZING!

All K-2 students and some 3-5 students (3-5 students classroom teachers will reach out to you if this applies to your child) have a school purchased Dreambox account and should login through Classlink.

Music News!

September has been a crazy, busy month! All of the students have been working hard getting to know each other, learning all of our new rules and expectations, and getting used to new technology. It has been a lot to take in, but they have all done great so far!

 

In music class, the Kindergarteners and 1st Graders have been experimenting with different sounds and patterns by drumming on their tables, using sticks, and learning about handheld classroom percussion instruments. In 2nd grade, students have been sharing and learning about each other musically, as well as recording themselves on Flipgrid, a site that lets students record themselves talking, singing, etc. The 3rd, 4th, and 5th Graders have been sharing musical things about themselves, reviewing from last year, and recording themselves singing on Flipgrid.

 

All students are part of a Google Classroom specific to Music Class for their classroom. While we are learning virtually, any assignments that they have will be posted there as well as on their classroom teacher’s Week At A Glance.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION?

During the month of September, all students at Jefferson Elementary have been learning routines, as well as basic movement skills and games. All students have an understanding on how to enter the gym, where their “squad” spots are on the floor, and how we run our digital warm up(s). Games and activities that were introduced in September include spatial awareness and throwing games.

On top of learning new physical skills, students have learned how to keep their bodies safe and clean. Before students enter the gym they wash their hands or use hand sanitizer. We are very limited to the type and amount of equipment we can use this year so we have to be sure we have clean hands so we can continue to use said equipment. Students are spread out across the gym more than ever before and are quickly understanding how to social distance during game play. Our new normal looks very different in P.E. but all students are catching on very fast! 

 

WHAT’S NEXT IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION?

Although it is hard to predict what will happen from day to day, we still have big plans for the month of October. All students will continue with throwing games and activities and they will also start striking. Striking can include kicking a ball, hitting a ball off of a tee, as well as striking a ball with some type of paddle. 

 

MASKS AND GYM SHOES

Thank you for making sure that your student(s) have the proper footwear at school for Physical Education Class. It keeps our gym floor clean and our toes safe! If you see a note home about gym shoes it is a reminder that your student needs new shoes or they need to bring their gym shoes back from home.

Masks are to be worn at all times in Physical Education UNLESS we go outside. Students have been doing a wonderful job of this. The biggest challenge we are having is that some masks are too big for little faces and they fall down when we run. We have a solution to this problem (twist your ear loop), but please make sure that your student(s) masks fit properly so they do not have to continue to pull it back up over their nose every time they run. 

 

TAKE YOUR PARENT TO PHYED WEEK-Oct 19th-23rd

At this time last year we were getting ready to have parents join us in P.E.! We had so much fun last year and I wish that I could welcome you all again this year...cross your fingers for Spring! However, the program is still happening across the country this year, but instead we are calling it BRING PE TO YOUR FAMILY! Be on the lookout for information in Friday folders about how you can be active at home with your family during the Week of October 19th-23rd. 

 

TIPS TO BE FIT AT HOME

While watching television, use the commercial breaks as your workout time! Have a family challenge to see who can do the most jumping jacks, push ups, or sit ups before the commercial is over. You can even use your furniture to add into the fun. Use a couch or a chair to create an incline/decline push up, or turn yourself around and use them for a tricep dip. The possibilities for fitness at home are endless!
